Sunny Saturday freebies and finally some rain

It only rained like ten drops last night, so it was another hot and sticky Saturday here. I was out with Damien all morning, doing the shopping for the long holiday weekend: some chicken at the butchery, cheese and veggies and some perfect strawberries at the farmer's market, then off to the fruit store.
Damien and I do this every Saturday (if I'm off work) and both enjoy it very much. He gets something to test eat basically at every stop. The shop owners all adore him, 'cause he is such an enthusiastic eater. Once on the way to the cheese stand at the farmer's market, Damien started yelling: "Look mommy, cheese, ...best cheese" He repeated this at the top of his lungs till we finally got there, where he repeated it in a normal tone of voice this time addressing the guy behind the stand while nodding encouragingly to emphasize his statement. Half of the people at the farmer's market were smiling at him. With that kind of advertisement, naturally he gets a huge piece of carrot cheese extra to try on the spot. Damien then goes on to bite off a huge piece, goes "Mmmhhhhhhh" and closes his eyes while eating, swallows and says "gut(good in German), really, really gut. You get the picture.
Then on to H&M to buy cute set for a co-worker, who just had a baby boy. It's a tank top with a pirate face in light blue, white, and khaki, matching khaki clamdiggers, and socks and bandana with white little skulls on light blue - too cute. Damien then went on to pick out a t-shirt for himself and he found matching clamdiggers to match too. They weren't even hanging next to each other. I was so surprised, I bought it. He really doesn't need it, but I actually love it and still can't believe he did that. He has never showed interest in clothes shopping till today. When I tell this to my mom she will be tickled.
Then we went home, cooked, ate, had a nap (better I did, while he rolled out toilet paper in the living room, which he then put in a shoe-box and put on the toilet seat, oh well, it could have been worse), on to a girl-friend's house to do some handiwork (connected her Ikea-, what else ;-), closets, and hung up a shelf on the wall). Met at her flat with Christian (he had to hold up the shelf, while we put the screws in), and then the 3 of us did some supermarket grocery shopping, met & chatted with a close friend in town, after that off home and cooked.
And then it finally rained. The air is nice and cool now. And I'm not sticking to my chair anymore while searching freebies - yippie :-)) Here's is what I found:

TGI Friday freebies and

give me an air-condition, please! Pretty, pretty please... We've had a little heat wave this week in Germany, which is fine with me, I love sunny weather. Now we are expecting a weekend of rain, ...what else could it be when it 's an extended holiday weekend and I'm off work...grrrrrr. But right now it hasn't rained yet and it's so hot & humid I would give anything for a breeze. And we live in a 5th floor, or should I better say top floor, apartment in the city and air-conditioning in private buildings are unheard of in Germany. But I so want one now. It took us 2 hours to get Damien to sleep, no wonder it is a whooping 27°C or 81°F in his room right now (10:45pm).

Well enough of my whining, not like I'm gonna be really happy when it rains and we have to play mostly inside tomorrow. On to today's freebies.

On top of that bugger-boy is having a "terrible two" week, with his favorite saying being "No Mommy, go away". For his 2nd favorite saying just substitute Mommy with Daddy. And he can say that over and over again... His all-time record so far is 30min without stopping. During this time I was pushing him in his stroller walking from day-care to our home. Unbelievable.

Ribbon Wrap Tutorial

Josie asked how I put the ribbons on the frame of the Family Ties layout below. So I went to check my favorite tutorial-site, Misty Cato's blog, but she doesn't have a tutorial on how to do that yet. So I'll try to do one myself, after all I was a tech rep at a helpdesk hotline once, so I should be able to explain things, right? muhhaha.
This tutorial is done in PSE4, should be similar in PS or PSCS, not sure about PSP though.
Here goes:
Start by opening the elements you want to use (I used W&W's Celebrating Color frame and ribbons and Creating Beauty rope all by Gina Marie Huff) and then drag and drop them on top of each other, so it looks like this:
Then click on the frame layer in the layer palette (on the right) while holding the ctrl-key, so the frame has the marching ants around it. Proceed by going to Select (in the menu-bar on top), Modify, Expand. Enter 1 to 5 px, depending on how large the object is (I used 4 in this example). This is to give the ribbon a more loosely wrapped around look.
After that click on the select tool in the tool-palette on the left and then right-click anywhere on your canvas. In the pop-up menu choose Select Inverse.
Now go to your layers palette (on the right) and mark all ribbon layers (by holding down your shift key) and right-click on one of them. In the pop-up menu select Merge Layers. You should then only have 3 layers: the canvas, the frame, and the ribbons.
Stay on your ribbons layer and with your eraser tool (in the tool palette on the left) erase the ribbon ends. I used a hard round brush, 500px.
Deselect the selection and stay on the ribbons layer. Now choose your burn tool at the bottom of the tool palette on the left (it looks like a hand holding nothing). Pick a soft round 100px brush (or whatever size works best for you) and run along the edges of the ribbon. These will darken.
Now add a little shadow, by going to your styles and effects palette (on the right) and then under the layer menu choose a low shadow and add it. I will be way to high, so go to Layer in the menu-bar (on the top), then to Layer Style and Style Settings. In the pop-up menu set the Shadow Distance to 1px and hit OK.
Finished. To add a little extra, I cut out the end pieces of the rope I used and added them in a layer under the ribbon layer and also gave it a slight shadow.
Voila, you did it.
For another example of this technique, look at the rope wrapped around the leg of the star in my header.
I hope that answers your question, Josie.

I hate it when something like that happens. On the good side, he's up and running like a charm at the moment, hope it stays that way.
